Gymnastics Coach Certification: Paths, Costs, and What to Require

Gymnastics coach certification sounds like one thing. A course, a card, maybe something laminated in a coach's wallet.

In the US, it actually covers two different things that share a name.

The first is a membership checklist. USA Gymnastics, the sport's governing body, won't let anyone coach on the floor at a sanctioned meet without a current membership.

That membership comes with required courses, a background check, and renewal dates.

The second is a certificate ladder. USA Gymnastics University runs a progressive set of certificates, from Instructor up to National Coach. Competitive membership asks for the first rung and a single course from the second.

Say you run Kipping Point Gymnastics. (It's made up. The prices are real.)

Mix those two up and you either over-train your preschool coaches or send a team coach to a meet with an expired membership. You'd rather find out about the expired membership before meet day.

This guide maps both, plus the All Star cheer credential, the main paths outside the US, and what each one costs right now.

If you're still deciding whether to coach at all, start with how to become a gymnastics coach.

This post assumes you've decided and want the paperwork straight.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • In the US, gymnastics coach certification covers two things: the USA Gymnastics membership checklist, and the certificate ladder on top of it.
  • An adult competitive coach pays about $204 in year one. An adult recreational coach pays about $48.
  • U110 and U101 both expire on July 31. Put every expiry date in one shared calendar.
  • Make U100 a rec requirement anyway, run U110 for every adult around kids, and check credentials at the interview.

What USA Gymnastics Requires to Coach

USA Gymnastics has two coach memberships. Which one you need depends on whether your athletes compete.

Competitive Coach is for anyone "coaching on the competition floor" at a sanctioned event, in any discipline: women's, men's, rhythmic, trampoline and tumbling, Gymnastics for All, and acro.

The Competitive Coach membership costs $99.

Recreational Coach is for anyone coaching non-competitive athletes.

The Recreational Coach membership costs $18.

Each one asks for something different, by age:

Recreational coaches can join at 14, and competitive coaches at 16.

A parent or guardian registers anyone under 18.

The courses, in plain terms

The course codes read like a bus timetable. In plain English:

  • U100: Fundamentals of Gymnastics Instruction. About three hours online. It covers class structure, supervision, professional boundaries, and foundational recreational skills. Free for members, $25 for non-members.
  • U101: Safety & Risk Management. This is the "Safety Certification" people mean, and it takes four to five hours. The 25-question exam at the end needs 75% to pass, and you get two attempts. It's $75 for members and $95 for non-members, and it's good for four years.
  • U110: SafeSport Core Course. Training on misconduct in sport, run by the US Center for SafeSport. Free for anyone required to take it, and it has to be renewed every year.
  • U112: Coaching and Control. A 30-minute course on emotional harm in sport, with a knowledge check you need 100% on. Free for everyone.
  • Background check. Run through the National Center for Safety Initiatives. It screens criminal history, the sex offender registry, and identity, and costs $30 for a domestic search.

If you've written a harassment prevention policy, U112 and the SafeSport course are the training that goes with it.

U101 covers the same ground as most of a coach's injury-prevention playbook: spotting, progressions, pits, and equipment.

The USA Gymnastics Certificate Ladder

Membership gets a coach on the floor. The certificate ladder is the professional development track on top of it.

USA Gymnastics University organizes it by "school," one per discipline. Each school has four certificates, and you have to finish one before the next one is awarded.

No skipping rungs, even for the coach who can still throw a back handspring in jeans.

If your team coaches meet the competitive membership requirements, you already have Instructor-certified coaches. Each one also holds U101, one of the courses on the next rung.

The ladder in the Women's Artistic school:

Certificate
Who it's for
What it takes
Instructor
New coaches
U100
Junior Olympic Development Coach
Pre-team and early compulsory levels
U101, a first aid course, U200 sports science, and W200 hands-on training
Junior Olympic Team Coach
Compulsory and early optional levels
W300 coaches course and U109 bloodborne pathogens
National Coach
Level 9, Level 10, and Elite
W400 national coaches course

Other schools, like Gymnastics for All, follow the same four rungs with different courses. Gymnastics for All swaps in a fitness course and a TeamGym judging exam, and caps the ladder with a Regional or National Congress.

The rest of the ladder is optional for membership. It's still how you know a coach can handle the gymnastics levels your team runs.

The first aid course on the Development rung can be USA Gymnastics' own Pro First Aid with Skill Evaluation, which certifies adult, child, and infant CPR and first aid.

Other US providers and circuits

GymCert is an authorized education provider for USA Gymnastics University.

Its online Level 1, 2, and 3 courses for recreational coaches can count for University credit. To get it, the coach needs a USA Gymnastics professional membership and has to send the certificate in.

USAIGC, the independent competition circuit, runs its own coach membership.

Members get free rules and policy clinics from August to January, and USAIGC also runs a Class Instructors workshop and a tumbling clinic.

All Star Cheer: USASF Credentials

The US All Star Federation's coach membership is $75 a season.

That one fee covers the membership, background screening, abuse prevention education, and the written credentialing tests.

Club owners pay it too.

All Star cheer has its own governing body, so if your tumbling classes feed a cheer program, this is the credential your cheer coaches will be asked about.

The credentialing courses work like this:

  • Course 101 is a glossary test and a "how to read the rules" test.
  • Course 102 is the written rules tests, by level: cheer building levels one through seven and tumbling levels one through six.

Coaches test up to the highest level they're comfortable coaching. Credentials last five years, and renewing means retesting at the highest level the coach wants to keep.

Coaching Certification Outside the US

Hiring a coach trained in Canada, the UK, or Australia? Gymnastics coach certification starts somewhere different in each one.

Canada: The NCCP

The National Coaching Certification Program covers 65 sports and is managed by the Coaching Association of Canada. Gymnastics Canada delivers the gymnastics streams.

Coaches start with Gymnastics Foundations, become "trained," then get evaluated to become "certified."

If you hire a coach from Canada, ask which of those two stages the coach has reached.

Provinces set the details.

British Columbia starts NCCP courses at 14 and asks for Respect in Sport and Safe Sport training before anyone coaches, plus a criminal record check for coaches 19 and older. Ontario starts NCCP training at 15.

The UK: British Gymnastics

For 2026, British Gymnastics replaced Level 1 in every discipline with Foundations of Gymnastics Coaching. It's an online, self-paced course for anyone 16 or older, and it takes eight to 14 hours. It costs £29, and only members can take it.

After it, coaches take Delivering Gymnastics Activities to earn the Assistant Foundation Coach credential.

Australia: Gymnastics Australia

The Coach Accreditation Framework runs Fundamental Gymnastics Coach, Intermediate, Advanced, Advanced Silver, and High Performance.

Intermediate is the level where a coach can run sessions independently. If you want an Australian hire running classes solo, that's the one to ask about.

The Renewal Calendar

It's August 1 at Kipping Point.

Every coach who didn't renew U110 in time is out of compliance as of this morning.

U110 and U101 both expire on July 31. That's handy right up until a good chunk of your staff lapses on the same day.

U110 and U101 both expire on July 31. A coach who takes U110 between June 1 and July 31 gets a December 31 expiration and has to take it twice that season.

Most of the other US requirements run on separate schedules that don't line up neatly.

What renews, and when:

Requirement
Renews
Cost
USA Gymnastics membership
Every season
$99 or $18
U110: SafeSport
Every year, expires July 31
Free if required
Concussion education (U201 meets it)
Every year
Free for members
Background check
Every two years
$30
U101: Safety & Risk Management
Every four years, expires July 31
$75 for members
Pro First Aid (U107)
Every two years
$115 for members
USASF coach membership
Every season
$75
USASF credential
Every five years
Included

The dates that catch people out:

  • U110 completed in June or July expires that December. USA Gymnastics says a coach who takes it from June 1 to July 31 gets a December 31 expiration and has to take it twice that season. Taking it on or after August 1 gets a full year.
  • U101 can be renewed up to a year early. The new certificate still runs four years.
  • The background check reruns itself. For the two years it's valid, the screening company rechecks automatically around the anniversary date.

When a background check expires, USA Gymnastics puts the membership in pending status until it's renewed. Without a current membership, a team coach can't coach at your sanctioned meet.

What to Require From Your Coaching Staff

Back to Kipping Point.

Kipping Point has six adult rec and preschool coaches, three adult team coaches, two 16-year-old junior coaches who assist the team, and two cheer coaches.

Start with what the required minimum costs for that staff. Your own policies come after that.

Here's what gymnastics coach certification costs Kipping Point in year one:

U100, U110, and U112 are free for members, so the number doesn't change. First aid would add $115 a head every two years if you use the USA Gymnastics course.

That's real money for a small gym.

Before you decide what to cover, check what your gymnastics insurance policy expects your coaches to hold.

Decide these before you hire:

  • Make U100 a rec requirement anyway. It's free for members, takes about three hours, and covers class structure and boundaries. Your preschool coach will use all of it.
  • Decide who pays. If you pay for courses and renewals, your coaches stay current. If coaches pay, put the rule in the offer letter so nobody's surprised.
  • Tie the ladder to pay. A coach with the Junior Olympic Development certificate is worth more to your team program. Say so in your coach pay structure.
  • Check credentials at the interview. Ask to see the coach's online USA Gymnastics membership card and course certificates. Add both to the checklist you already use when you hire staff for your gym.
  • Run U110 for every adult around kids. USA Gymnastics says any adult in a member club "who has regular contact with or authority over minors" must take it every year. That can include your front desk, your birthday-party staff, and the parent who helps run open gym.
  • Make U112 a requirement for your 16- and 17-year-olds too. USA Gymnastics only requires it of adults, but it's 30 minutes and free. Then every coach 16 and older works from the same line between pushing a kid hard and harming one, which a positive gym culture needs anyway.
  • Put every expiry date in one shared calendar. July 31 is the big one. Set the reminder for August 1, because anyone who takes U110 in June or July has to take it again in December.

Where Gym Software Fits

Parents want to know who's coaching their kid.

Your 16-year-old junior coach needs the attendance list but has no business seeing a family's card details. And if you tie pay to certificates, your team coaches need a different session rate than your rec coaches.

Gymdesk handles that side of it:

  • Instructor profiles parents can see. Each instructor gets a profile with a bio and photo that appears on your gym website. List the coach's certifications in the bio, and parents see them before booking a trial.
  • Access that matches the role.Staff permissions are granular, so Kipping Point's two junior coaches could take attendance without seeing billing or member payment details.
  • Track coach pay by program.Payroll tracking supports a program-specific session rate, so team coaching can pay more than rec coaching (and if you tie pay to the certificate ladder, that's where the raise goes). Each class a coach checks in to becomes a session entry, and the payroll report adds it up, with a CSV export to hand your payroll provider.

Gymdesk for gymnastics gyms runs the member side too: booking, waivers, and billing. Keeping certifications current is still on you and that shared calendar, but you can stop rebuilding the payroll spreadsheet every two weeks.

FAQ

Gymnastics Coach Certification FAQs

Quick answers to the questions coaches and owners search most.

How do I get certified to coach gymnastics?
In the US, gymnastics coach certification starts with joining USA Gymnastics as a Recreational or Competitive Coach. Competitive coaches complete U100: Fundamentals of Gymnastics Instruction, which earns the Instructor certificate, plus U101 Safety & Risk Management. Every adult coach also needs a background check, U110 SafeSport, U112, and concussion education. In Canada, start with NCCP Gymnastics Foundations. In the UK, start with Foundations of Gymnastics Coaching.
How much does gymnastics coach certification cost?
An adult competitive coach in the US pays about $204 in year one: $99 for the Competitive Coach membership, $75 for U101 Safety & Risk Management, and $30 for the background check. An adult recreational coach pays about $48. Both renew the membership every season and the background check every two years, and competitive coaches also renew U101 every four years.
How long does USA Gymnastics Safety Certification last?
Four years. The U101 certificate expires on July 31 of its fourth year, and coaches can recertify up to one year before it expires.
How old do you have to be to get gymnastics coach certification?
USA Gymnastics allows Recreational Coach members from age 14 and Competitive Coach members from age 16, with a parent or guardian registering them. In Canada, NCCP training starts at 14 in British Columbia and 15 in Ontario.
Is USASF credentialing the same as USA Gymnastics certification?
No, USASF credentials cover All Star cheer, including tumbling and building skills by level. USA Gymnastics certifications cover gymnastics disciplines and sanctioned gymnastics meets, so a coach working in both programs needs both.
